Artist and activist Selma Selman lives and works between Bosnia, New York and Amsterdam. In performances, paintings, photographs and video installations she deals with the problems of her own life and those of her community. Selman consciously defines herself as an artist of Roma origin and not as a Roma artist – a subtle but critically central distinction in relation to her work. In her latest work, Selman uses a mirrored stage cage to examine, exhibit and test the influences of one-way communication in social media and digital communication. She examines her personal expressions for empowerment and disempowerment. Selman uses the media to dissect the boundaries of identity, currency, law, representation and information imposed on her and those in limbo who are not black enough, but not white enough either.
