Chanelle Adams’ site-specific performances are tours through urban landscapes, for example botanical or zoological gardens. Here, the artist, researcher and essayist draws connections between the colonial history of these places and their ecology through hauntology (science of ghosts). For Summer Festival, she will create a Ghost Tour along the Elbe River that invites participants to sit with ghosts of plants and other beings, past and present, that have come to the river due to the city’s colonial history. As incantation with deeply meditative elements, the RIVER GHOST TOUR brings to light unseen and unresolved colonial continuities. It is a moving and entirely new way of exploring Hamburg’s role in colonialism from an ecological lens that will resonate for a long time.

The artist will hold live tours on August 12 and 13. Afterwards the RIVER GHOST TOUR will be available for a limited time as audio guide. Pre-registration is necessary.

The performance starts at Vermannkai near Baakenhafenbrücke. Meeting point is the HafenCity Universität stop on the U4 line, exit HafenCity Universität. There will be no box office on site.

You will need a smartphone with sufficient data volume and headphones to participate in the audio walk.
