There are few works more powerful on the European stage than those of Hungarian theater and film director Kornél Mundruczó and his independent group, Proton Theatre. In a hyper-realistic style with surrealistic layers, he takes an unsparing look at politics, society, and the disenfranchisement of people.

He is now presenting his latest work against the backdrop of a radical right-wing Hungarian government. PARALLAX tells the intergenerational story of a Jewish family in Budapest, whose members are searching for their identity and their place in society. Mundruczó and his team paint a deeply moving moral picture that intertwines the facets of Eastern European Judaism with the challenges of the LGBTIQ+ community, which faces numerous restrictions in Hungary. PARALLAX is an impressive and visually stunning illustration of why Kornél Mundruczó has become one of the most important European directors in recent years. In addition to his work with Proton Theatre, founded in 2009, his body of work includes productions for major opera houses, German city theaters, and nine feature films that have been screened in competitions at Cannes and Venice, among others.

Through the small monitor of a filming camera, an older, gesticulating woman can be seen. Her facial expression looks worried, the color tones are cold and the mood is correspondingly gloomy.
