SMC und S.T.R.E.A.M. Festival

Past dates

The Sound and Music Computing (SMC) conference 2016, will be accompanied by the S.T.R.E.A.M. festival (Sound – Technology – Room – Emotion – Aesthetics – Music). The festival will take place from 31st of August till the 3nd of September 2016 at the Kampnagel Kulturfabrik and the Finkenau Media Campus (HAW).

The S.T.R.E.A.M festival will showcase current developments in the area of music technology in anticipation of the grand opening of the Elbphilharmonie in 2017, and pay tribute to the rich expressions of computer music found in Hamburg and around the world. To this end we will be presenting the work of John Chowning, the »father« of the FM synthesis, implemented in one of the most famous synthesizers in musical history – the Yamaha DX7. John Chowning is a percussionist and composer who came to prominence as a founder of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University.

The festival will consist of a total of ten concerts, four of which will be lunchtime concerts in the new facilities at the Finkenau Campus. An international Call for Sonic Works has provided a jury with a pool of works to choose from.

The inauguration large installation »BLOSSOM« by of Lothar Eckhardt and students of the Hamburg Hafencity University with music by Xiao Fu will take place on Wednesday afternoon in front of the Finkenau studio building.

The Kampnagel evening concerts on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are dedicated to ensemble works. The first is a portrait concert of the works of Alexander Schubert performed by Decoder-Ensemble, who is one of their founding members. Thursday will present another opportunity to hear selected music chosen through the call for sonic works; these are to be performed by the Radar-Ensemble. Finally, the concert on Friday will be devoted to the music of our John Chowning, who has curated the concert himself.

Depending on the technical and conceptual nature of works, they will be performed either by TonArt Ensemble (for improvised music) and Radar Ensemble (for notated scores).

Studio concerts will follow the evening concerts on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday night’s concert will present experimental pieces by local musicians and Thursday night will consists of a concert with a focus on the emerging practice of real-time composition and animated notation. For this unique concert we will be inviting some preeminent exponents of the style: Nic Collins, a founder of the practice of circuit bending, Ryan Ross Smith whose wonderful animated scores the audience will be able to follow during the performance, Jason Freeman, a charismatic theorist and composer of music dealing with principles such as extreme sight-reading as well as Cat Hope, a Perth-based musician, composer, songwriter, sound and performance artist and the director of Decibel Music Ensemble known for her ‘accessible and relevant’ works of new music.

After the buffet following Friday evening’s concert, Hamburg composer and instrument builder Jacob Sello will present his new interactive instruments, including the award winning ‘Hexenkessel’.More informations on smc2016.net.
