Sunn O)))

With their ultra high-volume synthesis of metal, drone, jazz and minimalist sound, Sunn O))) have changed the way we think about music.

Anyone who has seen a performance of the band – whose name is a representation of sound waves – knows the effect their 12-amplifier towers can have on the pit of your stomach. Their excessively slowed-down guitar riffs –which they vastly expand with synthetic sounds and combine with ensemble instrumentations and vocals –are overwhelming, and sound like an attempt by the Devil to translate a black hole into chamber music. The group was founded in 1998 by Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley (the latter being also a long-term collaborator of French theater-maker Gisèle Vienne). Sunn O)))’s musical collaborators are as diverse as their sound, and range from Japanese noise musician Merzbow to legendary baritone Scott Walker, with whom they recorded their most recent »masterpiece«(spiegel.de) »Soused.« Live Sunn O))) will be performing as a four person band including Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar, also known for his vocal etudes for the infamous black-metal band Mayhem.

Support comes from Peter Rehberg aka PITA, head of Editions Mego and occasional collaborator of Stephen O'Malley, with whom he has formed the group KTL and creates music for theater works by Gisèle Vienne.
