Tümay Kılınçel

If the Orient is an invention of the West, belly dance belongs to the European cultural heritage. In an impressive solo, choreographer and dancer Tümay Kılınçel breaks with conventional assumptions about belly dance to situate it as an artistic and emancipated genre in the Western dance canon. With fantastic costumes she defragments the fetishized body and with it the orientalist, eroticized and exoticized image of women. In dialogue with the music of Leila Moon played by DJ Camilla Vetters, Kılınçel opens up spaces of imagination and self-empowerment and shouts self-confidently: I am not your Arabian princess!
