With his piece of the hour the artist Yan Duyvendak comes to Hamburg for the first time: Based on a simulation of the EU for governments and hospitals to make decisions in case of pandemics, he develops a participatory game.
Yan Duyvendak has been working on VIRUS for over two years now. Together with professionals from the gaming industry and science, Duyvendak is developing a participatory game based on a simulation scenario of the European Union and French ministries. West African governments and hospitals were offered to use this simulation to prepare for the outbreak of pandemics. In VIRUS the audience is confronted with different scenarios and tries to contain a pandemic through joint decision-making. Depending on the course of the game, societies can develop into a dictatorship or move into a new, utopian, freer future.
Originally, this work should have premiered at the Noorderzon Festival in Groningen and been shown for the first time in Germany at the European Centre for the Arts HELLERAU in Dresden. The real pandemic has thwarted all plans, which is why the piece will now be presented in Hamburg before (and with the support of) HELLERAU.
