Hip-hop is totally over. Passinho is the new baile-funk dance craze from the favelas of Brazil.
SUAVE is the Summerfestival’s hottest party disguised as a dance piece. The young Brazilian choreographer Alice Ripoll has snapped up the best Passinho dancers and, together with them, created a breathtaking and funfilled look into Brazil’s newest dance phenomenon. Supposedly invented at a barbecue party in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas in 2008, Passinho – Portugese for small step – first spread via youtube to Rio’s illegal bailefunk parties and then to the rest of the country. Passinho is a wild, virtuoso mixture of different styles, including breakdance, samba, frevo, kuduro and a bit of voguing. Together with ten young dancers from the outskirts of Rio, Alice Ripoll has created an energetic, rousing, humorous (and slightly queer) dance piece, in which barely adult performers demonstrate their dance skills. From boys to girls (and everything in between), from Poppenbüttel to Wilhelmsburg (and everything in between) – dress warmly! And be aware of Cakes da Killa’s concert on the 15th with SUAVE-dancers.
