Sevdah, otherwise known as ‘the Bosnian Fado’ represents the kind of melancholy love songs that were previously sung in the Ottoman Empire. Bozo Vreco flouts ethnic boundaries when, as a Bosnian Serb, he devotes himself to Sevdah, i.e. the music of Bosnian Muslims. The passionate musician and self-educated man breaks yet another taboo, which up until now was non-negotiable in the Balkans. He refuses to define his sexuality and plays with notions of femininity and masculinity on stage. Bozo Vreco stands on stage, passionately performing Bosnian love songs while sporting a long beard, make-up and home-made women’s clothes.
