Ecstatic all-star concert happening that uncovers an East German musical legacy beyond nostalgia.
2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and is an occasion for Carsten »Erobique« Meyer – known and loved for his oneman live-disco celebrations and his music for film and television (including »Tatortreiniger«) – as well as Trümmer-dandy Paul Pötsch and director Lea Connert to explore a corner of German cultural history that remains obscure for many: the musical legacy of the GDR of the ‘60s and ‘70s. During this period, music was created that incorporated elements of jazz, afrobeat, schlager, soul, tropicália and funk, and was far from the GDR’s clichéd grey image. These compositions and texts were created under socialism, escaping censorship as poetry. For WIR TREIBEN DIE LIEBE AUF DIE WEIDE (WE HERD LOVE OUT TO PASTURE), a show-band that includes Meyer and Pötsch, Polly Lapkovskaja, Marcel Römer and Pola Lia Schulten, accompanied by surprise guests, will re-interpret pieces by influential musicians like Uschi Brüning, Veronika Fischer, Nina Hagen and Manfred Krug. Enriched with documentary material and texts, it is an intensive concert event that goes way beyond nostalgia, and celebrates the special significance of the music, its hidden rebellious qualities and soft subversiveness.
