Daniel Kahn has appeared on the Kampnagel stage as the Hunter in Socalled’s puppet musical , composed theater music for productions at Berlin’s Maxim Gorki Theater, released more than a dozen albums, and since 2021 has been living on a houseboat in Hamburg. This November, the Detroit-born songwriter, poet, and multi-instrumentalist will release his new album “UMRU / unrest” – a continuation of his long-standing engagement with Yiddish music and, at the same time, a manifesto for a transnational Yiddish culture that positions itself against fascism and violence. From klezmer to apocalyptic jazz, from grotesque cabaret to intimate campfire songs, from Yiddish traditionals to works by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Tom Waits: in a trio with violinist Jake Shulman-Ment and multi-instrumentalist Christian Dawid, Kahn unleashes a gripping energy and will show live at the Kampnagel club why, for him, the term “multi-talent is a complete understatement” (laut.de).
