When the indie pop influencers from Deerhoof play… it’s magic!
After beginnings as an obscure noise act, the band, which was founded in San Francisco in 1994, has, thanks to their left-field approach to different styles and influences, become one of the most influential indie pop bands of the present (or, according to the hype medium Pitchfork, »the best band in the world«). Experimental noise rock meets on occasion with sugary 1960s garage, and then just one song later, punk is re-combined with, for example, glam metal. The soft singing by the Japanese Satomi Matsuzaki makes any attempt at macho musician poses futile. The list of Deerhoof’s former collaborators and tour partners reads like a »who is who« of American indie culture. They recorded an entire Joy Division album with XiuXiu, played with members of Wilco and of Montreal, and – in addition to tours with Radiohead, Sonic Youth and Beck – they performed at New York’s High-Line Festival on invitation by David Bowie (whom Michael Clark created a farewell in dance). After their last concert at the Hafenklang in 2015, Deerhoof are now returning to Hamburg to present their album »The Magic«.
