Don‘t worry about pop music, here‘s what its future will sound like: weightless, floating, icy-smooth melodies with an electronic kick.
When Emika performed at the Summerfestival two years ago, her cool, chrome-smooth music already suggested an exciting future direction for pop music. Now »Drei,« the new album by the English-born Berliner, has delivered on it. Emika’s soft voice floats out of ice-cold soundscapes – infused with the latest innovations in electronic music, from techno to dubstep – with the weightless melancholy of a club evening or morning. Emika’s beats disclose her broad knowledge as a musician: She has worked for the leading music software company Native Instruments and released a solo piano album earlier this year, before producing her album »Drei« by herself in only two weeks after leaving Ninja Tune to launch her own label, Emika Records, and writing a symphony (to be recorded by the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra in September). »Drei« is the quintessence of the 1986-born artist (birth name: Ema Jolly), and yet another blueprint for the future, created with the tools of today. Support comes from the duo Gatwick whose breakbeat electro pop makes Hamburg a cosmopolitan city for once.
