The memories of two great American dance icons as a choreographic chamber piece
At the moment, contemporary dance is particularly interested in its own roots. With her series about choreography and history, choreographer Eszter Salamon has shown that she is one of the most interesting voices in the European dance scene. The first part of the series, MONUMENT 0, premiered two years ago at the International Summer Festival, and was hailed by critics and audiences at Europe’s most important performance venues, including the Avignon Festival. Now its continuation, MONUMENT 0.1, tells dance history from the perspective of those who stood on the stage. Valda Setterfield and Gus Solomons Jr. have worked with the most important choreographers of the 20th century, and in this subtly wrought, touching theater piece, describe their life and encounters with legends of modern dance, like Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. With words, movement and contemplative images, the two remember six decades of radical dance development in sprightly fashion.
