What if humanity could pass through the gateway to the underworld and start anew in another sphere? Eva Reiter's experimental opera ‘The Rise’, written on the basis of poems by Nobel Prize winner Louise Glück and staged by choreographer Michiel Vandeveldes, plays out this vision. At the centre is the deaf actor Ruben Grandits, whose gestures are transformed into intoxicating sounds via sensors on his hands. As master of ceremonies, he controls the other people on stage with his gestures and sounds. The interplay of specially built instruments, electronically transformed sounds and the movements of the performers creates a new language, a new society and a new music. The specially developed instruments visibly transform movement into sound. Music, dance and language unite in image and sound - making ‘The Rise’ equally accessible to deaf and hearing people.

A young white man with blond hair and a grey and white costume stands in front of a backdrop of black, crumpled foil and raises his hands in despair. Behind him, a bald man holds his hands against the wall.

On a dark stage, a person in a flowing costume jumps a large step forwards. In the background, several people are standing in the fog.

Seven people stand in a circle and stretch their arms out towards each other in the centre. They grab small elongated objects from the centre. There is hardly any light.
