In 1996, a car accident with several fatalities occurred in the small Turkish town of Susurluk. The subsequent investigations brought ‘connections between politicians, the police and armed activists’ to public attention and triggered a scandal. Berlin-based artist Göksu Kunak uses the road accident as a metaphor for the corrupt political system and patriarchal oppression. With a mixture of installation, light art and performance, she creates a space in which reality and fiction become blurred and the boundaries between truth and staging are scrutinised. Kunak uses the Susurluk accident as a starting point for a complex reflection on power, fetishism and the construction of reality. To this end, he develops a suggestive visual language that combines latex, luxury limosines and rock star attitude.
The art magazine Monopol writes about Kunak's work: "Queer nudity, cars, strong signs: Is this critical or affirmative? If you really want to get closer to Kunak's performances, you will quickly find yourself overwhelmed."
INNOCENCE is the first time that Göksu Kunak's own work has been shown at Kampnagel in Hamburg as part of the Live Art Festival.
