In the 1970s, keyboardist and accordionist Hailu Mergia jammed with Duke Ellington and invented Ethio-Jazz in Addis Ababa with his band The Walias and fellow musician Mulatu Astatke (who will also play at Kampnagel on November 30st!). In 1981, Mergia fled the Ethiopian dictatorship to the U.S., where he worked as a cab driver for years – until the nerd blog »Awesome Tapes From Africa« re-released a tape in 2013 that Mergia had recorded himself in the U.S. Since then, Hailu Mergia has again been euphorically celebrated on stages around the world and now comes to Kampnagel for the third time with Ethiopian bass wizard Alemseged Kebede as well as Trinidadian drummer Kenneth Joseph, presenting a new album entitled »Yene Mircha«.
