How does a new “we” emerge when the old one is lost? How much freedom does a collective need — and when does order become coercion? In RE:PUBLIC, the dancers of the Hamburg Chamber Ballet, all of whom fled the war in Ukraine, create a composition of change, transition, and growth within a societal utopia. Drawing on Plato’s reflections on justice and order, the dancers explore what solidarity can mean today. Under the choreographic direction of Edvin Revazov, a RE:PUBLIC of bodies, movements, and relationships takes shape. In the interplay of synchrony and dissolution, structure and rupture, power and empathy, a sensual commentary on our present emerges: Can a community be just, or does it remain a concept, a space of possibility, a wish?
RE:PUBLIC is being created in collaboration with JazzHall Hamburg and Australian jazz guitarist Danica Hobden (a graduate of Dr. Langner's Jazzmaster program at HfMT Hamburg). Following their first joint project, “Jazz Meets Ballet,” which celebrated a highly acclaimed premiere at the JazzHall in May 2025, RE:PUBLIC is now their second collaboration—a unique combination of dance and music, body and sound, performative negotiation of reality and utopia.
RE:PUBLIC will be presented at the JazzHall Hamburg in May 2026.
