JISR جسر (Arabic for “bridge”) unleashes the full force of border-crossing music in their concerts. Here, jazz harmonies meet Saharan blues, West African Bantu traditions merge with Arabic classical music, and the Arabic oud loses itself in Indian rhythms. The quintet is led by the charismatic linguist, singer, percussionist, and guembri player Mohcine Ramdan, who last appeared at Kampnagel during the 2023 Summer Festival.
With their new album HASRA – Arabic for “bittersweet longing” – JISR present a manifesto of longing, encounter and hope. Created during an intense journey through Morocco, it brings together the urban soundscapes of Casablanca with the voices and rhythms of the Sahara to form a work beyond all categories. Music that reflects migration, identity, and transformation as lived realities – and transforms them into a cosmopolitan sound of magnetic power.
