Actually, everything should stay as it is. Or would it be better to start from scratch? When it comes to building in the cultural sector, there is hardly any solution in Germany between these two extremes. Whether in Cologne, Frankfurt or Hamburg – whether theatre, concert or opera: conception, planning and construction rarely go beyond the options of new construction versus renovation of the status quo. Why are all the debates so bipolar? Why is there a lack of imagination when it comes to dealing with and transforming existing buildings? What happens to cultural buildings, most of which are listed, when new ones are built elsewhere? And where and how are performances actually held while existing buildings are being renovated? Discussing upcoming and ongoing ideas and projects at Kampnagel and in Hafen City are:
Amelie Deuflhard, Director of Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik GmbH
Anne Lacaton, architect at Bureau Lacaton Vassal
Reiner Nagel, Director of Bundesstiftung Baukultur
Oliver Scheytt, Managing Director of Kulturexperten GmbH (moderator)
