Past dates

In a group exhibition, the Kunstverein in Hamburg and the International Summer Festival present protagonists of the Hamburg art world and international positions that work with sound. The exhibition at the Kunstverein is a reaction to the experience of the past months and emphasizes the importance of artistic production, especially in times of a worldwide disruption. CORONA SOUND SYSTEM is the second part of the exhibition series BEING LAID UP WAS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT MAKING ART and foregrounds the experience of listening. Summer Festival artists such as Thies Mynther, Veit Sprenger and Tobias Euler or Felix Kubin and Kampnagel regulars such as the Schwabinggrad Ballett & Arrivati develop sound scores and installations that run like a six-hour album one after the other during an exhibition day. Further sound works are by Wolfgang Tillmans, the electronic composer and musician Holly Herndon (who has already been a guest at the summer festival in 2015 and 2019) or the experimental Early Music Choir Ensemble Graindelavoix and its director Björn Schmelzer from Antwerp (whose Summer Festival concert in a church had to be postponed until next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic). In a spacial setting, radio plays, ambient music and concerts are placed alongside minimalist tones – and one unique cosmos of sound alternates with the next.
