Mulatu Astatke

The Ethiopian vibraphonist, percussionist, composer and arranger Mulatu Astatke has influenced generations of musicians and appears musically in Jim Jarmusch films as well as sampled in songs by Kanye West or Nas. After studies in Europe and the USA, Astatke began to mix various Afro- and Latin-American styles with elements of traditional Ethiopian music in the vibrant music scene of Addis Abbeba at the end of the 1960s. Together with fellow musicians he created a completely independent genre, the "Ethio-Jazz. Now the 78-year-old returns to Kampnagel with his ensemble for a rare performance to once again reveal the timeless magic of his music.
