Seun Kuti brings the political power of Afrobeat into our club, accompanied by the 14-piece band of his father, Fela Kuti.

For a long time, Afrobeat was more than just a genre – it was a musical expression of the pan-African freedom movement. Nigerian musician Fela Kuti was one of the most important voices in the fight for a democratic Africa. His son Seun Kuti played with Egypt 80, his father’s legendary band, when he was a kid, but after his father’s sudden death in 1997, he took over the role of lead singer at age 14 and carried the Afrobeat torch into the new millennium. Seun Kuti dedicates his musical blend of West African Highlife, polyrhythmic Yoruba percussion and Western jazz and funk to the political fight against the world’s mighty. After a furious concert at Kampnagel in 2014, Seun now returns, changing the Kampnagel Club into an afro-dance floor with the legendary 14-person band Egypt 80 right after the premiere of Serge Aimé Coulibaly’s dance piece about Fela Kuti. They’ll also be bringing pieces of the forthcoming album, which will be released in September. Following this Afro-aficionado (and host of a Kalakuta event series) Martin Moritz will play a DJ Set.

DANCE: Choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly brings a dance piece on Fela Kuti's life and music to the International Summer Festival. KALAKUTA REPUBLIK (17. - 19.08., Double Ticket with concert and performance on 17.08. 44/34 euro)
