SHABAZZ PALACES

The afrofuturist powerhouse invites audience members on a stoner space trip to surprising musical worlds.

Shabazz Palaces mix west-coast psychedelica with the spiritual ideas of Sun-Ra, as well as cloud rap, jazz, UK bass and other genres to create music that points to hip-hop’s diverse cultural roots while floating in its own futuristic universe. They have collaborated with greats like Kamasi Washington and Flying Lotus. Their most recent release, on the indie Subpop label, »Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star« and »Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines,« is a double concept album about a future extraterrestrial being called Quazarz. Like Socalled’s alien, Tina, Quazarz visits an Earth-like planet (»Amurderca«) where people willingly take part in a submissive relationship with their machines. After their most recent concert in 2014, Ishmael Butler and the multi-instrumentalist Tendai Maraire once again land on Planet Kampnagel to present their crazy space-funk live at the Summer Festival. As an opening act, the fantastic Love-Songs present their artful and funky Kraut-Update – music for hearts, brains and legs!
