Kurt Weill for the 21st century: This is how exciting classical music can be rethought and played from the perspective of pop.
SEVEN DEADLY PEARLS showcases the musical universe of singer, musician and composer Shara Nova, who works under the name My Brightest Diamond and is among the most outstanding pop composers of the moment. After studying opera and composition, Nova worked with musicians like Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner and David Byrne, composed the pop-opera for baroque orchestra, YOU US WE ALL in 2013 for the International Summer Festival and released four albums as My Brightest Diamond that blur the boundaries between chamber music and indie-rock. Her fifth album, »A Million and One«, will be released in 2018. At the Elbphilharmonie, Shara Nova will show off her full orchestral power: together with the Aarhus Symfoniorkester, she will perform Kurt Weill’s satirical ballet SEVEN DEADLY SINS as a vocalist, as well as re-orchestrated My Brightest Diamond songs. SOMETHING FOR THE DARK, an orchestral work by American composer Sarah Kirkland Snider is also on the program – the two artists have previously collaborated closely. Snider’s piece is a contrapunctual meditation on hope in uneasy times that shows how exciting orchestral music can still be for the pop-acclimatized ears of the 21st century. And those who happily step out of the Elbphilharmonie into the night afterwards can look forward to November 16th: Then My Brightest Diamond returns to present her new album at Kampnagel (tickets are on sale HERE).
