Last festival, he made his puppets dance in THE SEASON, a sold-out anarcho-musical. Now Socalled, the Canadian musical cabinet of wonders, is back.

Socalled (real name is Josh Dolgin) is a magician, photographer, cartoonist, musical composer, high-speed entertainer and musician. He has collaborated with everyone from his friend Chilly Gonzales to the soon-to-be-100 yearold lounge pianist Irving Fields. He has also worked with James Brown trombonist Fred Wesley and rapper Killah Priest. Socalled incorporates musical styles ranging from Klezmer to hiphop, but again and again, he manages to sharpen his wideranging eclecticism thanks to his brilliant feel for melody and beats. His new album, »Peoplewatching« (Membran Records), is proof of this. On the album, Socalled demonstrates that hip-hop is the most cosmopolitan of musical forms, and allows for the introduction of everything from jazz to dancehall music. If you’ve seen Socalled’s captivating musical, THE SEASON, at last year’s festival, or if you’ve caught one of his many sold-out concerts, you’ll know how expertly he can use a solid hook to electrify an audience. This is preceded by American singer Sophia Kennedy – a winner of Hamburg’s Krach&Getöse music prize, and an occasional theater musician – who will play sepiacolored pop in a minor key.
