In Trajal Harrell’s interpretation of Medea, the protagonist does not stand alone but comes as a multitude, as the tragedy and ritual elements of the myth are projected onto the personal histories of a five-strong chorus. In this way, Harrell interrogates the representation of the female psyche through the ages. The New York choreographer, famous for his sensuous and genre-busting queerings of history, makes the emotional residues at the edge of our collective historical imagination perceptible as political and ethical concerns. How would Medea speak in 2019? How would she dance? And above all – how would she avenge herself?
