Waacking, originally spelt ‘whacking’, originated in Los Angeles in the 1970s as a dance style of the LGBTQ disco scene. At a time when queer people were largely invisible and stigmatised, waacking offered them a platform for expression and visibility. The style developed from so-called punking, a reinterpretation of the pejorative term ‘punk’, and is characterised by dynamic, accentuated arm movements to the beat of the music. Mounia Nassangar is a Waacking icon, dancer, choreographer, model and part of the legendary House of Gorgeous Gucci. In February, she was a guest at Kampnagel with her first choreographic work STUCK, which has toured successfully internationally. Now she is giving a three-day intensive Waacking workshop for dancers.
