After ten years, ambient romanticist Wolfgang Voigt returns with his project GAS.
Wolfgang Voigt is considered one of the most influential figures in the wide world of electronic music. The Kompakt label, which he co-founded (and which has released works by, among others, DJ Koze and Who- MadeWho) spurred global hype for German club music. Voigt’s own strictly conceptual productions, which he has been releasing under countless pseudonyms since the 1980s, have earned him a reputation as a pioneer of minimal techno. Voigt released music in the late 90s as part of a project named GAS in which he almost completely ignored the bass drum, a techno staple, instead working with samples of classical pieces by the likes of Mahler, Wagner and Bruckner. This acoustic exploration of German music- culture in all of its ambivalences led to four grimly ecstatic ambient albums often mentioned in the same breath as Brian Eno’s ambient series. After a long break, Wolfgang Voigt has now released a new album called »Narkopop« to mark the 20th anniversary of the project, which he will present live the Summer Festival in an audiovisual concert.
