For almost a quarter of a century, Bohren & der Club of Gore has been playing a reduced form of dark jazz that pays homage to the beauty of minimalist slowness. Originally founded as a heavy metal / hardcore band, the trio has long since defied categorization and now presents »Patchouli Blue«, its eighth studio album. Despite the hippie and gothic scent reference in the title, however, the album is not a retrospective celebration of times past (or of olfactory penetrance), but shows Bohren at the height of their musical art: from the deceleration arises an infinite tension of the individual notes, every saxophone insert, every bass run or chord on the analog synthesizer becomes an event here. Originally planned for 2020, Bohren & der Club of Gore are now coming to Kampnagel for the third time with the new album to set up their sound sculptures, freed from any superfluous dross, live as an acoustic voyage of discovery in front of and with an audience.
Support comes from Hamburg musician Blurred Twin, who also aims at a complex minimalism with harmonium and vocals - and whose music (like Bohren's) also fits the adjectives of a patchouli perfume advertisement: "earthy, woody-herb and balsamic-sweet".
