Following the performance THE ANSWER IS LAND by Elle Sofe Sara, Nordwind, in cooperation with IMAGINE HAMBURG, is organising a discussion format on perspectives for a sustainable future and creative solutions to the effects of man-made climate change. Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska from the team of Sami-Norwegian artist Elle Sofe Sara, Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate and Dr Stefan Aykut (Mercator Endowed Chair of Sociology Hamburg) will discuss the links between the climate crisis and migration. Afterwards, there will also be space for the audience to ask questions and discuss how climate change and migration can be tackled together.
Vanessa Nakate is a climate justice activist in Uganda, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and author of A Bigger Picture. Inspired by Greta Thunberg, Vanessa Nakate founded her own climate movement in Uganda and began a lone strike against inaction on the climate crisis in January 2019. Nakate founded the Vash Green Schools Project, a renewable energy initiative. She was awarded the 2022 Helmut Schmidt Future Prize.
Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska is a traditional yoiker, composer and artist living in Tromsø, Sápmi, Northern Norway. She is one of the best-known artists of Sami music in Sápmi and internationally. Gaup is very committed to preserving the Sámi singing tradition, which has almost died out as a result of the strong process of assimilation, Norwegianisation and Christianisation to which the Sámi have been and continue to be subjected. Since the joint production VÁSTÁDUS EANA - THE ANSWER IS LAND 2021, Gaup has been working with Elle Sofe Sara as a singer and co-creator. In her work, choreographer and filmmaker Elle Sofe Sara explores often overlooked aspects of the Sámi physiology, unspoken rituals that have escaped the grip of colonialism.
Stefan Aykut is the author and co-author of more than 20 articles and book chapters on international climate policy, climate controversies, energy transition and transition énergétique, and the role of energy futures in energy policy. He is co-author of Gouverner le climat? 20 ans de négociations internationales (Presses de Sciences Po, 2015, with Amy Dahan), a review of international climate negotiations. Stefan teaches and lectures at various universities in and around Paris, including the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the UTC Compiègne, the Université Panthéon-Assas, the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées, and Sciences Po Paris.
