If ever the adjective “breathtaking” fits, it’s to describe the new play by waggish performance artist Miet Warlop. Because not just the people on stage get out of breath here, but the audience as well, as they watch 14 performers in a dizzying sports piece which turns out to be a sweaty concert of one single song. A freaked-out stadium announcer, a fan choir, a football team, a violinist on the balance beam, a singer on the treadmill: everyone gives everything here until the last note, breath or drop of sweat. And thus, create a ravishing allegory on life, loss, art and theatre, which Miet Warlop has brought close to the fine arts for 20 years. Her exhilarating spectacles of color and form, with which she has been a frequent guest at Summer Festival, are expanded with ONE SONG, a performance art piece that was created at the Belgian City Theater NTGent as part of a series on the (personal) history of theatre, frenetically celebrated at its premiere at Festival d’Avignon, and declared highlight of the year by the New York Times.
