Over the past 20 years, US choreographer Kyle Abraham has become a leading figure in contemporary dance. With ease and precision, he creates dance-based work featuring the rich tapestry of Black and Queer Stories. In addition to works for large ensembles like the New York City Ballet and the Royal Ballet London, he choreographs works with his own company, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, creating worlds galvanized by Black American culture and history in dialogue with 21 century music. Following the acclaimed premiere of a Black Futurism-driven requiem at Summer Festival 2021, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham is now presenting another world premiere: In CASSETTE VOL. 1 he pays tribute to the music of the 1980s and early 90s when pop music became omnipresent in public life. To the soundtrack of a decade, the dancers show through rousing choreographies how pop music shapes society into a universal experience. With multifaceted movement material inspired by postmodern icons such as Trisha Brown and the evolution of queer culture in the 80s, Abraham creates an exhilarating evening in homage to nostalgia and camp.
