Overview of the project TheHost.Is

thehost.is is a hybrid residency program by Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Kampnagel. Both institutions are thus expanding their artistic program into the digital realm: a total of five thematic focuses (seasons) will take place through late 2023, each featuring three international residents who will engage in discursive, experimental research at the interface between art and technology in their own projects, both digitally and in person. The residencies form an experimental playing field for the development of new (digital) approaches to artistic production and knowledge transfer. Each three-month program will be led and thematically shaped by an international artist or curator, who will be appointed by the institutions as a host.

The themes of the seasons deal with the critical questioning of hegemonic orders in code, with decolonial strategies, digital resistance, self-empowerment, and the democratization of digital systems as well as with queer feminist utopias, reflected in artistic practices.

The residencies will be accompanied by a program that aims to connect people from the art and tech scenes in Hamburg and internationally through a variety of events and formats in person and online. In addition, Kampnagel and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg will offer a variety of recurring educational and networking activities, inputs, and workshops that will tie in with the theme of each season and the work of the residents.
