Afrofuturism can be described as a cultural aesthetic combining elements of science fiction, magical realism and African history. The artistic, musical and literary movement is often traced back to jazz composer and cosmic philosopher Sun Ra who, together with the ever changing ensemble The Arkestra, was an important influencer on free improvisation and modal jazz. Interviewed in the 1992 essay Black to the Future in which Mark Dery coins the term Afrofuturism Greg Tate is seen as a godfather of that school of black thought. Since launching his career at the Village Voice in the early 1980s he has been one of the most important critical voices on contemporary Black music, art, literature, film, and politics.
