DANCING QUEER is a pop-up performance that mixes the art of drag and the art of bellydance to protest for the rights of LGBT+ people in Egypt. DANCING QUEER embodies political statements on body hair, beauty standards, gender expression and sexuality and shows that you don’t have to fit into a mould to be successful. Shrouk El-Attar is an engineer, belly dancer, refugee and LGBT+ rights campaigner from Egypt.

Workshop: Belly Dance & Queer politics

A workshop covering the past and present of belly dance and how it ties into Egyptian queer history and politics, followed by an authentic Egyptian Bellydance movement lesson, so get ready to get moving! Participation possible without prior knowledge.

Possible triggers: This workshop features an upsetting video of Shrouk’s family and their deportation from the UK. The video is 2.5 minutes long. You do not have to watch this video to take part in the workshop, it will be announced that it is going to be played and you can leave the room if you choose to.
